Eight Hours
Eight hours in the shop today. Eight straight hours of carving, bleeding, and inhaling sawdust. Eight hours and it’s still not done. My project is due Monday, and i couldn’t more ready for it to be over.
Rebel
This flag hangs outside of the South Carolina capitol building. I still remember the first time i saw while i was walking around Columbia and thought “that’s awesome!” Why? Not because i have any love for The South of the Civil War, not because i have any racial hate, and not even because i have some great love of Dixieland in the general sense. I think it’s awesome because it’s a rare example of the man sticking it to the bigger man. There’s no way the national government thinks it’s cool that South Carolina flies the rebel flag. I mean there’s plenty of people in South Carolina that don’t think it’s cool that we fly the rebel flag. They speak of racism, backwards thinking, and holding on to past wounds. They find the flag offensive, and maybe they’re right. Personally, the Civil War has been over for a long time and it never really affected my life so it doesn’t really matter to me one way or the other, but i can see how other people might be affected differently. If you can get past all that, though, if you can stop seeing it as a Civil War reference you might see that it’s a rare thing when a state stands up the the nation. It’s rare and it’s awesome and it’s why i hope that this flag continues to fly in front of the capitol for some time.
